On Lagos Island, the Portuguese first set foot there in 1472. However, trade didn't really take off until a century later, when the Portuguese were given a number of asientos de negros, or monopolies, to sell slaves in the Spanish Americas. The Portuguese, who dubbed the island Onim (and later Lagos) and started a thriving slave trade, had strong relations with the indigenous obas (kings). The transatlantic slave trade is another example. The culmination of British efforts to end the slave trade was a naval assault on Lagos and the removal of the oba in 1851. However, the slave trade persisted until British forces took over control of Lagos in 1861.
From 1866 until 1874, Lagos was a part of the United Kingdom's West African Settlements before being annexed to the Gold Coast Colony (modern Ghana). It regained its independence in 1886 while ruled by a British administrator and merged with the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria in 1906.
After the union of Southern and Northern Nigeria in 1914, Lagos became the capital of the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria. It was recognized as federal territory in 1954, although the city itself became part of the Western Nigeria region. When Nigeria gained its independence in 1960, the government moved to Lagos.
In 1967, when Lagos state was formed, the city regained authority over its surrounding countryside. As a result of its burgeoning slums, environmental pollution, and traffic congestion, Lagos was deemed unfit to serve as the nation's capital, therefore a new one was built in Abuja after 1975.
